Salman Butt, the former Pakistan captain, spent the entire third day of the spot-fixing hearings in Doha being examined first by his own lawyer before facing what has been described as "a tough" cross-examination by the ICC's legal team.

Butt is facing charges of spot-fixing during the Lord's Test between Pakistan and England last summer along with bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, the trio alleged to have bowled deliberate, pre-planned no-balls.


Butt was Test captain at the time and he has since maintained his innocence publicly and more aggressively than the other two players. In several interviews on TV and elsewhere, he has explained the presence of the money found in his hotel room after the scandal broke in the News of the World, as well as his relationship with Mazhar Majeed, the player-agent caught on camera claiming he could orchestrate spot-fixing within the side.

The fact that he spent the whole day being examined indicates the significance of his role in the proceedings and the part it may play in the final outcome. One observer said the cross-questioning "had been a tough one, though that is something they would have expected." It also increases the chances, with Asif and Amir still to present their defence and be cross-examined, of the hearing lasting its full scheduled duration till January 11.

On Friday the ICC had heard from their witnesses, including Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis and Mazhar Mahmood, the NOTW investigative reporter responsible for the initial story. The hearings also heard from Khawaja Najam, who was the team's security manager during the World Twenty20 and the England tour, but has since stepped down from the post. In a recently leaked report of statements Najam made to ICC investigators, details were revealed of the money and currency found in the players' rooms immediately after the Lord's Test.

Much of the questioning of the Pakistani witnesses on the second day of the hearing had been to simply confirm or deny events and statements they had already made, with little "beating about the bush" about surrounding speculation. At least one of the witnesses believes that leaves little scope for doubt to be created and suggests that the situation doesn't augur particularly well for the trio.

It isn't clear yet whether Butt's cross-examination will continue on the fourth day or who is to follow him on the stand. The order of appearance has been pre-decided by the tribunal.

The day didn't appear to have visibly affected Butt. He walked out at the end with his lawyer Yasin Patel looking considerably more relaxed than on previous days, engaged in what appeared to be a discussion with Patel about Imran Khan and Dennis Lillee.

The WBC has ordered a rematch between light-heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and veteran Bernard Hopkins.

Champion Pascal retained the belt after being handed a controversial majority draw following their December 18 bout, a decision 45-year-old Hopkins called 'robbery'.

Pascal had been under contract to give Chad Dawson a rematch after a similarly controversial stoppage win earlier in 2010, but WBC president Jose Sulaiman said Hopkins must be given another shot first.

"The WBC board of governors has voted in favor of ordering the immediate rematch," Sulaiman said in a letter to both camps.

"The winner of this fight has the obligation to fight Chad Dawson immediately without any intervening contest."

Hopkins, who turns 46 later this month, was delighted with the news.

"I would like to thank Jose Sulaiman and the WBC board of governors for ordering an immediate rematch between Pascal and I," Hopkins said.

"This is a great thing for boxing and hopefully fans will get to see another great fight with Pascal and I. I'm looking forward to starting off the New Year by making history as the oldest athlete to win a major championship in any sport."

Hopkins' and Pascal's promoters have 30 days to reach a deal or a purse bid will be ordered.

Roger Federer opened the season in ominous fashion as he closed out the Qatar Open with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Nicolay Davydenko.

The world number two claimed a break of serve in each set to take the title from the Russian, who made a brave defence of the title he won 12 months ago.

Federer served impeccably throughout and although his opponent saved six break points in the first set it was inevitable that the Swiss would claim the crucial break.

The second followed in similar fashion as Federer moved Davydenko around at will, breaking the Russian to love in the ninth game before serving out with ease to take his third title in Doha.

"It feels fantastic," said Federer, who didn't drop a set in five matches. "I have had a good week. I really appreciate the support I get here.

"I have had good preparation. I can't believe that I am on the board already this year.

"This was a strong tournament and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

Pakistan romped to a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Hamilton after the hosts were skittled for just 110 in their second innings.

Wahab Riaz, Abdul Rehman and Umar Gul set up victory for the tourists as they claimed three wickets apiece to bundle out the home team inside 38.2 overs.

With Pakistan having registered a lead of 92 runs earlier in the day, that meant they required just 19 to complete victory and openers Mohammed Hafeez and Taufeeq Umar knocked off the runs with ease.

At the start of day three the tourists resumed on 235-4 and they went on to secure a handy first innings lead of 91 despite losing the overnight pair Misbah-ul-Haq (62) and Asad Shafiq (83) early on.

Adnan Akmal (44) and Rehman (28) then defied the Kiwi bowlers and added 76 for the seventh wicket before Tim Southee sparked a rush of wickets by dismissing wicketkeeper Akmal.

Umar Gul (17) and Tanvir Ahmed (18) added useful runs for the ninth wicket and took the lead past 90 before Brent Arnel, Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin shared the remaining three wickets, as Pakistan were all out for 367.

Arnel was the pick of the home bowlers with 4-94 while Martin finished with 3-86, claiming his 500th first-class wicket in the process.

In reply, New Zealand openers Brendon McCullum and Tim McIntosh made a decent start to their second innings and had reached 33-0 by tea.

Wickets tumble
But wickets tumbled on the resumption with McIntosh, who struggled throughout his short stay at the crease, the first to go after being stumped off left-arm spinner Rehman.

McCullum attempted to unsettle the Pakistan bowlers through counter-attack, but departed five overs later to a dubious decision, when umpire Rod Tucker adjudged he had got a tickle on a leg-side delivery when it appeared to have clipped his thigh pad.

The fall of McCullum triggered a mass collapse as the next four New Zealand wickets fell for just two runs inside six overs.

Martin Guptill's struggles against Rehman saw him attempt a big heave, but the top edge went straight to mid-wicket to leave New Zealand on 60-3.

Jesse Ryder departed soon after, trapped in front by a fine yorker from Riaz, and Ross Taylor joined him back in the pavilion after being run out by a direct hit from Misbah following a quick single.

The woes of New Zealand, still trailing by 32, continued as Williamson departed amid a mini-drama as the 20-year-old batsman was ruled out after a bat-pad appeal, though the initial shout for lbw had been turned down.

Rehman then trapped Vettori lbw to leave New Zealand in deep trouble at 71-7 and, while wicket-keeper Reece Young and Southee stood firm for a while and wiped out the deficit, but both fell to Gul in his successive overs.

Martin and Arnel took the team past the 100-run mark but did not survive for much longer as Martin became Gul's third victim after adding 10 more.

Chasing a paltry victory target of just 19, Hafeez and Taufeeq obliged to complete a spectacular victory in the first of the two Test matches against the Black Caps.

Rossi scores a penalty

VILLAREAL eliminated VALENCIA CF after turning the match around in spectacular fashion to win 4-2 the 2ºleg match. The 1ºst leg finished in a 0 - 0 draw & Valencia CF was already up two goals thanks to BENAGA 4th min & SOLDADO in the 22nd min to set the team on a winning course.

Then Valencia was literally "sank" in the 2ºhalf by a "new look" Villareal who surprised everyone coming on with a totally different mentality. The come-back started via CAZORLA with a 47th min goal, ROSSI who transformed a penalty in the 49th min, M.RUBEN with his 63rd min goal & again ROSSI in the 93rd min.


A superb game of Spanish Cup Football!

Earlier in the day GETAFE was knocked out by 2º Division leaders REAL BETIS after losing 1 -3 in the 2ºleg. Getafe had gone into this match with a 1 - 2 advantage from the 1º leg but failed dismally to take advantage. The goals for Betis came thanks to MOLINA (56th min) & CASTRO ( 72nd & 90th min). Getafe managed a goal via CASQUERO in the 93rd min but it was all too late.

Big scoring game at MALLORCA who went in with 3- 4 disadvantage from the 1º st leg to lose again 3-4 against ALMERIA in the 2º leg. Almeria did all the damage early with goals from PIATTI (1st min), ORTIZ (3rd min & 33rd min) & PIATTI again in the 41st min.  Then Mallorca reacted well in the 2ºhalf to attempt a "miracle" come-bcak with goals from CAVENAGHI (69th & 76th min) & PEREIRA (75th min ) but too late, Mallorca out of the Spanish Cup.

Sergio Aguero

RCD ESPANYOL drew 1 - 1 against ATLETICO DE MADRID to be eliminated from the Spanish Cup. In the first leg the visitors won 1-0 & the 24th min fabulous "one-man-show" SERGIO AGUERO goal was the "killer". Espanyol managed a goal via LUIS GARCIA in the 92nd min with a gran free-kick but it was too late.

Not much in play in the last game except pride. LEVANTE lost the 1ºst leg 8-0 & REAL MADRID put on a "B Team". Boring match except for the last moments when Levante scored a penalty in the 6ist min via XISCO & SERGIO put in a free-kick in the 41st min. Final rersult : 2 - 0
